Richard    Powell    was born in Dorset and studied music at London University, Goldsmiths College, where he studied with Paul Steinitz and Anthony Milner. He studied organ with Arthur Wills at Ely Cathedral and Peter Moorse in London. After a tentative few years teaching music in schools as far apart as Sicily where he worked at the nascent Danilo Dolci school in Partinico, and later Shetland, he moved to Norway in 1985, where he remained until 2017, working with choirs, giving organ concerts and playing for services in the Norwegian Lutheran Church. After   gaining   his   B.Mus,   LRAM   and   ARCM,   he   studied   at   the   National Centre   for   Orchestral   Studies,   as   a   double   bass   player,   working   with Simon   Rattle,   Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Colin Davis, Lorin Maazel, Vernon Handley, Sir Charles Mackerras, George Hurst and   many   others.   This   year   proved   to   be   a   seminal influence on his musical views. Choral   conducting   has   been   a   large   part   of   his   professional   life,   working   with   many   different   combinations   of   voices,   of   all ages.   In   turn,   this   led   to   much   of   his   work   as   a   composer   and   arranger.   Richard   is   published   in   Norway   by   Norsk Musikforlag and Cantando, in Germany by Tonos, and in the UK by the RSCM. In   2001   he   spent   a   year   at   Uppsala   Cathedral,   where   he   was   one   of   the   organists   and   conducted   the   Girls’   Choir,   the Children’s Choir and the Youth Choir. He also gave several organ concerts in the cathedral and other churches in the area. Ålesund   Chamber   Choir   produced   a   CD   of   his   music   in   2009,   conducted   by   Rune   Bergmann.   He   has   worked   over   many years with Giske Male Voice choir, arranging much of their repertoire and accompanying them on several CD projects. Organ   study   has   continued   throughout   his   career,   with   Ralph   Gustavson   in   Stockholm,   Erwin   Wiersinga   and   Roger   Fisher. He   has   been   especially   active   as   an   organ   tour   arranger   for   colleagues   in   Norway.   These   tours   have   taken   him   to   Sweden, Holland, Germany, France and the UK. He now works freelance in the UK, composing, arranging and typesetting manuscripts, as well as occasionally giving organ recitals.
